The Path to Zen - Training, Development and Empowerment in Zen Fundraising

When crafting the path to excellence in any field, training and development are at the core, especially in the impactful world of fundraising.

At Zen Fundraising, our commitment to nurturing and empowering our team extends beyond accomplishing tasks.

We aim to ignite passion and enhance skills. Our environment is one where every team member feels valued and poised to make a real difference.

We caught up with Annie, our Training and Development Officer, to uncover the secrets behind our innovative approach to training, designed not just to educate but to inspire.

Q&Annie

For us, training isn't just a routine but a transformative journey for fundraisers.

A: Can you tell us more about the regular Team Leader training at Zen Fundraising?

Annie: Sure. I set them up as group calls with the TLs across the regions, which means we get a positive mix of experiences and backgrounds. These sessions are so much more than just managerial techniques and organising shifts.

I think there is a misconception that the pathway to being a team leader means simply managing shifts and leading a team. It's so much more than that.

The TL training centres on inspiring leaders to pass their energy to the regions. These sessions aim to equip both new and experienced team leaders with best practices and inspiration and provide a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Q: Can you tell us a success story from these training sessions that stands out to you?

Annie: One standout success story is Asfa from Birmingham. Seeing her growth from a new starter to a confident team leader has been so inspiring.

Asfa joined us two years ago, and her journey demonstrates the power of our training programmes in nurturing talent and driving personal development.

Asfa has such determination and the spirit we strive for at Zen, I'm excited to see where her journey takes her.

Q: What are 'Inspire' sessions, and how do they differ from 'Refresher' training? Could you explain their significance and how they contribute to a fundraiser's growth?

Annie: 'Inspire' sessions are all about developing fundraisers' knowledge and passion for the cause.

In my previous experience, these were led by Regional Managers. Being led by a dedicated Training Manager (that's me!) makes me a lot more personable. Fundraisers know they are coming to the sessions to learn and be inspired; these differ from their usual morning meetings and pitch practice.

Fundraisers show up with pads and pens, and we have intervals to discuss the training and what we see on screen. These sessions are...what they say they are. They INSPIRE.

They keep fundraisers engaged and motivated.

On the other hand, 'Refresher' training focuses on technical aspects like compliance, GDPR, opting in etc. Refreshers ensure that fundraisers stay up-to-date with regulations and are in the know about what to do in certain situations.

Refresher sessions are sometimes requested by Regional Managers, so that teams can top up on their process knowledge and compliance practices. That being said, there haven't been any requests in a while. This is great news - everyone is up to date!

Q: Can you share a memorable moment or breakthrough during one of the 'Inspire' sessions?

Annie: Ah, all the time. Inspire sessions often spark lively discussions and lightbulb moments among fundraisers.

Many ask about volunteering opportunities and there is a huge amount of knowledge and story-sharing. There's definitely a sense of community in these sessions. I think they empower fundraisers to make a real difference and understand the impact of their work more.

Q: Tell us about the Pitch Perfect competitions. How do these competitions promote a competitive yet supportive environment among fundraisers?

Annie: Pitch Perfect competitions incentivise fundraisers to improve their pitches. They do have a competitive edge yes - the winning Pitch Perfect-ee receives a cash bonus. But they are a friendly and supportive way to develop skills and motivate each other to excel and make a positive impact.

Our recent winner, Andrew, thanked his fundraising peers for his win. After really capturing my heart with his genuine passion for women’s rights, he dedicated his win to both Maria's for ''pushing me to be a better fundraiser and helping me with my pitch.''

Q: Could you tell us about a particularly innovative or effective pitch that won a recent competition?

Annie: Absolutely. Maria's pitch. Maria is from our Dublin team and is raising vital funds for our charity partner Action Aid Ireland.

Her narrative truly stood out with its passion and creativity. Her storytelling and empathy resonated so much. It took me on a journey. It got me right in the feels.

It shows in her work, you know - she makes genuine connections in fundraising.

Q: What do you find most fulfilling about your role, and how has it impacted your personal growth?

Annie: Definitely witnessing the growth of fundraisers and knowing that I've played a part in their journey. It doesn't feel like a job, more a passion for positively impacting humanity.

Q: How do you ensure the training programs stay fresh and engaging for new and seasoned fundraisers?

Annie: I want to keep the training programmes relevant and impactful by constantly learning and adapting. I am grateful to be able to enrol in new courses to learn more about different approaches. I want to empower fundraisers at every stage of their careers.

Q: Are there any careers training programs or enhancements to existing ones that you're excited about?

Annie: I'm developing a leadership-focused training programme to inspire and empower both Team Leaders and Managers. I'm always looking fir opportunities to advance our training offerings and drive even more impact.

Q: Thanks Annie, can you tell us a bit about your fundraising journey?

Annie: Absolutely. I started out as a fundraiser for Shelter in Manchester. It was meant to be an extra income while I was studying at University, but I loved it so much that I quit University and committed to it full-time.

After a year, I became a Team Leader and then a senior TL in 2015. I then moved on to a Training and Compliance role at Guide Dogs.

Before Zen, I was fortunate enough to work with Richard, who is now our Director of Partnerships and Development. It's funny how things come around again.

In 2021, I joined Zen as a Training and Compliance Officer before I went travelling. In 2023 I returned to where I feel like I belong - working for Zen Fundraising, and living in Manchester.
