Black Friday has become synonymous with spending. In 2023, UK consumers spent an astonishing £13.3 billion in Black Friday sales. This year, projections estimate over £9 billion will be spent across the Black Friday weekend.
The average consumer expected to part with £278 during the shopping frenzy. It remains clear this is a time of significant financial activity.
But at Zen, we believe this period can mean more than sales and savings. That’s why, this year, we chose to flip the script with our Give Back Friday campaign. A celebration of generosity and giving.
Why Give Back Friday?
As a fundraising organisation, giving back is at the heart of our ethos. It fuels our work with incredible charities and our mission to connect supporters with causes they care deeply about.
We know that true value doesn’t come from what we purchase but from what we give. That’s why, instead of leaning into consumer trends, we're embracing the opportunity to shine a light on the power of philanthropy.
We pledge to donate £500 each to three incredible charities, chosen with the help of our LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok communities. We hope to inspire people to pause and reflect on the causes they care about and spark conversations about giving back, just as our fantastic fundraisers do daily.
Black Friday Stats and the Joy of Giving
Black Friday statistics reveal a stark contrast between consumer behaviour and charitable giving:
In 2023, UK Black Friday spending rose 7.3% to £13.3 billion.
Gen Z shoppers are some of the biggest spenders, drawn to fast fashion and tech deals.
80% of consumers planned to spend, prioritising high-value deals.
While these numbers show the growing appeal of shopping, they also highlight the potential for redirection. Imagine the impact if even a small fraction of that spending power were channelled into charitable causes.
